Message from the Director, Dr. Mridula Mukherjee
A Vision for NMML
The NMML is not just a Museum and Library as the name suggests. It is as much an institute of advance study in the area of modern and contemporary history and one of the largest Archives in the country for material relating to the Indian freedom struggle in particular and modern and contemporary India in general.
Computerization of Library:
The entire activities of the Library are to be automated through complete computerization thereby reducing the paper work to a minimum. With the help of a comprehensive and dynamic website, all catalogues of resources available for research in the form of books, newspapers, private papers etc. will have to be digitized and made available on the net. The computerization of the Library will vastly improve services to the users from all over the world
Digitization Initiative:
The research resources in the form of documents, microfilms, photographs, books etc. in the NMML are very rich and the NMML is the only such institution in the country having abundant source material on the historical and social developments during the colonial and post colonial India. Digitization of such rare material has to be done immediately for preservation of the materials for posterity and for easy dissemination.
The digitization of this material has two objectives. The first one is preservation. The second objective is to make information about the contents of the collections available to a global audience.

Management Thoughts
-Dr.Kiran Karnik
Amongst the most striking features of Indias space programme are its societal impact, efficiency, excellence and cost-effectiveness. Most observers are intrigued as to how ISRO, a government organisation, is able to do this. Is it then an exception, an aberration, or is it possible for others to emulate its success? What are the key factors that have contributed to the success and can they be replicated?
It is not so much the vision itself, but its communication that has been instrumental in creating great motivation. Amongst the achievements of top leadership has been their ability to get others to internalise the vision, to make it a part of the DNA of the organisation. A long-term orientation and consistency of vision have been both the cause and effect of such internalisation. The fact that the vision is not a merely technological one but primarily societal, has helped.
In government, administration is generally a dominant function and plays a control role. While ISRO follows the procedures of government, it has given the bureaucrats an administrative role that is important, but is positioned as a support and service function. Control and decision-making is with the techno-managers. This model has worked well over the decades. Maintaining the balance between bureaucracy and techno-managers is not easy, but is essential for transparency, efficiency and speed of execution
